Firefly on the International Space Station

November 30th, 2007 . by polyGeek

This is just too cool:

NASA Browncoat Astronaut Steven Swanson took the Firefly and Serenity DVDs with him on Space Shuttle Atlantis STS-117 mission, which lifted off on Friday June 8, 2007. The DVDs will permanently reside on the International Space Station as a form of entertainment for the station’s crews.

Community based design

Or you could call it community based chaos. But it’s fun either way. For at least a little while.

David Keith: A surprising idea for “solving” climate change

November 17th, 2007 . by polyGeek

Environmental scientist David Keith provides us with his views on climate engineering and how it could be used to put the brakes on global warming.

It’s refreshing to see someone speak of their idea, an important one at that, with such objectivity. David Keith is talking about his ideas for saving the planet, and perhaps humanity. He speaks persuasively but not by preaching. He lays out the theories and says, “we need to thing about this more.”I wish we could have politicians with this sort of candor and thoughtfulness. But that’s about as likely as China reducing CO2 emissions.

Someone hit a homerun on this website for IKEA. I love the ability to turn around and go backward through space.

Going over to the Apple side

November 13th, 2007 . by polyGeek

The Algorithmist asked Flex developers who have switched from Windows to Macs recently what their experience has been like.

There’s a nice collection of comments going that’s worth reading if you, like myself, are thinking about making the switch.

Power a TV with a AAA battery

November 10th, 2007 . by polyGeek

Imagine this scenario: You’re in a place where there are no power outlets. You’re cellphone is dead and you need to make a call. What to do?

Well, if you have a AAA battery, and some RCA cable - actually any wires would  work - then you’re set. Bonus points if you have some tape handy.

Oh, and you need the charger to your cellphone.

Here comes the big one . . .?

November 9th, 2007 . by polyGeek

Outside of an asteroid or cometary impact the immanent explosion of the Yellowstone supervolcano is the biggest concern for planetary disruption. So it isn’t good news that the caldera is lifting at record levels.

But hey, on the bright side the enormous amount of ash and dust added to the atmosphere would slow down global warming.
